My
father, a perennial bogey golfer, introduced me to golf. Knowing
that time to practice was limited, running a law firm and trying
to raise three children, he adopted a great attitude about his
game. Bogey golf was par for him. Watching him make bogeys and
keeping his cool helped me with my course manners. I began taking
lessons at age 10 with my father making sure I got to the course
to practice and play when I could. As I grew older, we would go
to the club on Saturdays, usually the first off which left us
plenty of time for afternoon chores. That was our main time together
and he taught me more than just golf, he taught me how to stay
in control of my emotions which ultimately helped my game. I remember
him saying, “Swing easy and hit hard” and to a brash teenager
I’d say, “Yea Pop, right.” It took years for me to figure that
out. Now when I teach, I stress the importance of “tempo” in the
swing. It is a key to good golf.
At
age 50, with the encouragement of my mentor Bill Strausbaugh,
I knew teaching was my passion. After a stint as an assistant
golf professional at two clubs in Naples, I looked to the USGTF
as my next step. I met Wayne Dahlstrom a fellow member and from
my hometown of Baltimore and he convinced me to join. I do some
private lessons at Briarwood Driving Range in Naples and also
playing lessons at my students’ clubs. I am thankful for the opportunity
to remain in the golf profession and if not for the USGTF, I would
not be writing this letter. I have been successful in combining
a real estate business with golf helping clients find the “right”
golf course first and the house second. It is important that we
get our priorities straight! In doing this, I also add to my list
of students who in turn tell their friends. It is a win win situation.
Treat them right, listen to their needs and be positive. Thanks
to Bob, Mark and Mike for your input and encouragement. The USGTF
is a great organization and I look forward to moving up to Level
IV soon.
