Keith Butts
USGTF Level IV Master Teaching Professional
Kingwood, TX

I was born November 24, 1943 in Detroit, Michigan. In school I was an average student who was a little better than average in such sports as football, baseball and basketball. For example, when I was a freshman, I played basketball for the varsity team. At the age of 17 I went to work in the manufacturing industry, and during that time I started playing golf., Within three years, I was shooting scores in the high 70's and playing in local amateur tournaments.

In 1966, I was drafted into the military and sent to Europe, where I became a light weapons specialist and served special duty on the European Marksmanship Team. I spent my tour of duty traveling around the world competing in international competition. In 1968 I was released from active duty from the military and started attending Monroe Community College. I played second man on the golf team for MCCC and was a medalist twice in collegiate competition.

After graduating from MCCC, I transferred to Eastern Michigan University, but to help with my college expenses I gave up collegiate golf and went to work for a PGA professional. At Radrick Farms Golf Course, my duties included golf course started, ranger, golf shop attendant, and handicap chairman. During this time I also caddied in professional tournaments such as the Michigan Open, Michigan PGA, US Open qualifiers and PGA qualifiers. In addition, I played in the Michigan Open qualifiers twice where I missed qualifying by three shots the first time and by two shots the next time.

In 1976 I earned my Bachelor of Science degree from Eastern Michigan University in education, majoring in physical science and mathematics. I also received a Certificate of Merit in recognition for outstanding scholarship. For the next 22 years I taught in the Michigan and Texas public school systems. During this time I also earned a Masters of Science degree in Science Education from Eastern Michigan in 1979.

In September of 1998 I became a Certified Golf Teaching Professional via the United States Golf Teachers Federation. Then, in April of 1999, I began operating KAB Golf at the Humble Oil Patch Golf Center, and for the next five years I gave more than 3000 golf lessons. In October of 2003 I earned my Level IV Master Teaching Professional certification with the USGTF and also participated in the Examiner's Course.
