STEINBERG FEATURED
IN NY DAILY NEWS
ARTICLE
USGTF sport psychologist
Dr. Gregg Steinberg was featured
in the August 12, 2010, edition of
the New York Daily News, regarding
an article about Tiger Woods
and his mental and emotional state
following the tumultuous happenings
in Woods’ life.
In the article, Steinberg was
quoted as saying, “I think what’s
going on is he’s under this
immense stress and he doesn’t
appreciate it. The biggest thing to
buffer stress is a support system,
and his support system has broken
down. Basically he’s emotionally
crumbling. He’s imploding and
that’s what we’re seeing on the
golf course.”

AMERICAN DISABLED GOLFERS
ASSOCIATION CREATES NEW FORUM
Continuing in its mission to help America’s disabled golfers, the American
Disabled Golfers Association has created a first-of-its-kind online
bulletin board forum specifically geared for disabled golfers. These players
are welcome to share their personal stories and experiences, and provide
inspiration to their fellow golfers.
In addition, able-bodied golfers are welcome to contribute. The
mission of the bulletin board is to provide disabled golfers a means by
which to communicate with one another and to learn from each other.
With this information, they are more likely to achieve maximum enjoyment
out of the game.
It has been estimated that there are 5 million golfers who are disabled
in the United States, and some have found it challenging to play the game.
In some cases, unnecessary barriers and unfounded regulations are in
place at some facilities, which only serve to make playing golf needlessly
more difficult for the disabled. One of the goals of the ADGA is to make
these facilities aware of a larger target audience that they may be missing.
Implementation of the bulletin board will serve to shed light on facilities
that provide the greatest ease of access to disabled players.
More information on the ADGA can be found at
www.AmericanDisabledGolfersAssociation.com, and the bulletin board can be found
under the National Forum tab near the top of the home page.
NEWS FROM AUSTRIA
Six young golfers received their
Junior Golf Bronze Certificates
as the first step to golf proficiency
at Golf Burgkonradsheim in the
end-of-season program. All golfers
were six-to-eight years old, and
completed 16 hours of training.
Ania Bryla, W-AGTF teaching
professional, tested the children in
22 different tasks, including technique,
fitness, and rules. They are
enthusiastically looking forward to
achieving their Silver Certificates
after the winter break.
LLOYD GAUTHIER’S
HOLE-IN-ONE LEGACY
CGTF professional
Lloyd Gauthier,
who teaches at Metchosin Golf &
Country Club in Victoria, British
Columbia, has done it again.
Gauthier recently scored his 14th
hole in one, adding to a legacy
that is 35 years in the making.
Gauthier sank his first ace
back in 1975 at the Palm Springs
Country Club in California. His
longest span between holes-in-one
was 13 years, from 1992-2005, and
he didn’t hesitate to make up for
lost time. His latest ace was the 8th
since his dry spell ended in 2005.
PHILIPPINES MEMBER MENTORS CHAMPION
GRANDDAUGHTER
by Mario Taguines, Level III Member
Arnie Pauline Taguinesis a six-year-old girl and
first grade student of the Colegio San Agustin
of Makati, Philippines. She started to develop her
interest in the game of golf at the early age of
three. However, she does not want to be taught by
anyone except me, being her granddad and usual
company at the driving range or fairways. I had
been playing golf for about eight years, but I wasn’t
too sure if I was doing the right thing and definitely
did not have the skill to teach the game, especially
to a toddler like Arnie.
That’s the very reason I took the September
2008 USGTF teaching course under the mentorship of Mr. David Vaught at
Oakland, California. After a year of playing golf, Arnie started competing in
local tournaments in the Philippines and won several of them in the Class
“F” Division, six years and under. Her first international experience was in
the Super Junior Golf Championship 2009, held in Singapore, which she
won. And this year, she won the qualifying rounds in the Philippines to
participate in the 2010 Callaway World Junior Golf Championship held at
Colina Golf Club, San Diego, USA, where she placed third.
Arnie and I wish to extend our gratitude to the USGTF for lessons,
news, and golf tips we are continually receiving, and they have been very
beneficial to both of us as teacher and student of the game of golf.

The seventh annual Kelly Cup was held at St. Clair
Parkway near Sarnia, Ontario, this past year, and
was the fi rst time the matches were held on Canadian
soil. The event will rotate between Michigan and Ontario
each year from now on.
The Ontario side got off to a
sizeable fi rst day lead and held back the determined
Michigan side to earn a three-point victory. The event
is held in honor of USGTF golf teacher Thomas Kelly
who died suddenly on the golf course, “with the fellas,”
in 2003.
The Ontario side of 10 players, led by team captain
and Ontario Tour director Dennis Babcock, took an
early three-point lead
following 10 team
matches of four-ball
and foursome matches
on day one and
never let go of it. The
Michigan side chipped
into the lead early on
day two, getting back
a point going into the
fi nal nine-hole matches.
But, the Ontario side
rallied in the afternoon
matches, regain their
three-point advantage, 161/2 - 131/2.
Team Michigan’s team of 10 was led by Ken Burk, of
Lockport, New York (formerly from Capac, Michigan).
Twenty individual matches were played on day 2 – ten
match play and ten Stableford matches.
Ontario’s Daryl Sinden (St. Thomas) won all four
points and was the top point-earner of the matches.
Fellow teammate and top international player David
Belling (Sarnia) won three points for Ontario. Scott
Millman (Farmington Hills) won 31/2 points for Team
Michigan. Remarkably, Don Smith (Hartland) gutted out
11/2 points on day two despite a painful elbow injury
suffered before the matches began.
Next year the Kelly Cup will return to Michigan
under the
watchful eye
of Barbara
Kelly, widow of Thomas Kelly, and her two sons, Thomas,
Jr. and Edward. In 2009, the family was presented with a
$1,400 scholarship for her two grandchildren’s (Arianna
& Edward, Jr.) college education. Both of the younger Kellys are honor roll students in the Romulus school
system.
Winning team members from Ontario were Paul
Kelly (Leaskdale – no relation to Thomas), Kristian
Kasemetes (Windsor ) , J im Beaton (Tecumseh), Dennis Babcock
(Chatham), Carl Abel
(McGregor ) , Pete Willems (Strathroy),
Gilles Charbonneau
(Tecumseh), Grant
Gulych (Aylmer),
Sinden and Belling.
Michigan team members were Jim Helmke (Highland),
Rob Ruley (Toledo,
Ohio ) , Mark Widman (Marine City), Jack Black (Westland), Ken injury
suffered before the matches began.
