GOLF TEACHING PRO%u00ae 53 WINTER 2O26Yet another incredible certification course was completed in Oxford, England, in August, with enlightenment, knowledge, camaraderie and effectiveness underlying the outcome.STORIES FROM AROUND THE WORLD GREAT BRITAIN AND IRELAND Ihave watched a few videos lately from golf social media experts quoting facts about handicaps generally not improving over the last 30 years, despite the massive improvements in equipment, balls and general course conditions. The answers to that statement are easy to conclude. From the work of Charles Seasure on feedback: 1) We fail to realize people don%u2019t learn from information only. 2) We fail to realize that people will not learn with only one trial; there is not enough repetition/practice. 3) We fail to realize the importance of context; we need to watch and help them play better golf on the course. From the work of Tim Gallwey, Fred Shoemaker and, Kendal McWade: We need to learn that the client is the most significant resource, and their need to discover how to learn. From NLP (neuro-linguistic programming): We need to learn how to communicate effectively, as so many lessons end in confusion. From psychology: We need to discover the power of the mind in helping all performance and the general increase in enjoyment on the golf course. From philosophy: We need to learn how to walk wisely and without ego in our communication as we attempt to guide and inspire. From institutes like The Golfing Machine: We need to truly understand the geometry and the anatomy of the golf swing. These are just a few of the things we as coaches need to do better so we can improve the handicaps for those who seek to play better golf!I am about to move to a different house, and as we are downsizing, I need to reduce my library. I have discovered that, over the past 50 years, I have amassed over 500 books on the subjects above, as well as some on marketing. In short, whatever we learn on our certification course, we need to keep adding forever because the more you know, the more you realize you know nothing! Keep on enjoying the journey.
