GOLF TEACHING PRO%u00ae 06 WINTER 2O26The dictionary definition of %u201cModern%u201d is %u201crelating to the present or recent times as opposed to the remote past.%u201d When it comes to golf, the literature says that the modern game began in Scotland during the 15th century. To the people of the time, it was a modern game, but that form of play is so far removed from present day golf that it is impossible to equate the two. The fact is that over the years, golf has undergone several significant upgrades which at the time would be considered modern. So, let%u2019s redefine the term modern to mean modernization and we%u2019ll explore all the times it has occurred. The first and in my opinion most significant modernization of the game occurred in 1848 with the introduction of the gutta percha ball. Untill then there were only a handful of golf courses and very few players. They consisted primarily of nobles and wealthy merchants who were the only ones that could afford the expensive leather pouch stuffed with feathers for play. The gutta ball changed everything. Costing a few pence, it made the game affordable for most people and they took to the game like flies on honey. The new influx created a demand for more equipment and more golf courses. The 15th century game became modernized for the first time but there would be much more to come over the years.THE EVOLUTION OF MODERN GOLF. KNOWLEDGE MIKE STEVENSBy Mike Stevens, USGTF MemberThe next 50+ years saw great improvement in the quality of play, especially among those that were keepers of the greens or the professionals. The first modern golf competition took place at the Prestwick Golf Club where 8 professionals played 36 holes over the 12 hole layout for a championship belt. The tournament, now known as the Open Championship, is the oldest competition in the golf world and golfers now compete for a Claret Jug that replaced the Championship Belt which was retired by Young Tom Morris after winning the tournament three successive years. As more local competitions were popping up on the annual calendar, a group of golfers in Leith, a suburb of Edinburgh, decided that a set of rules were needed to govern the competitions and they originated 13 rules that formed the basis for the conditions of play going forward. The game was growing at a rapid pace. By the end of the 19th century, golf had firmly established itself as a global sport, with a presence on every continent except Antarctica. Its expansion continued into the 20th century, and golf continued to evolve and captivate players and fans worldwide.
