Okay, technically he’s not a professional as he still has his amateur status, but Bryson DeChambeau is certain to make his mark on the pro scene once he claims professional status – and maybe before then. DeChambeau is the reigning NCAA Division I and U.S. Amateur champion, only the fifth golfer in history to claim both titles in the same year. Aside from his incredible talent (DeChambeau also finished as runner-up in the 2015 Australian Masters), he is also known for having all his irons the same length – 37 1/2″. Those who remember the old Tommy Armour EQL irons from the 1990s will find this familiar. DeChambeau’s technique also is different than conventional. He restricts his wrist cock, reminiscent of Steve Stricker, and swings very close to a single plane throughout his motion, reminiscent of Moe Norman. Like Norman, DeChambeau also uses oversized grips, preferring to hold the club more in the palms of his hands. To complete his old-school look, DeChambeau also frequently dons a Hogan-style tam o’shanter cap. DeChambeau has qualified to play in this year’s Masters, U.S. Open, and British Open provided he remains an amateur, although he plans to turn pro after the Masters, since won’t be eligible to defend his NCAA title as his school, Southern Methodist University, has been ruled ineligible for the NCAAs due to recruiting infractions. Given his pedigree and results so far in the professional arena, no one should be surprised if DeChambeau becomes the first amateur in decades to be in contention for a green jacket come Masters Sunday.
